1.
East of the sun and west of the moon There was no end to her loveliness So lovely was she You wouldn’t believe Where she is today The pale moon glares down on their home They’re all alone out there Waiting for something to come along And rescue them And it’s bound to be soon Under the pale moon, there’s something hiding Knocks on their door, it’s also waiting for someone And that someone is her The loveliest girl She loves them so But she wants to say no Until her father lets her go And she goes She is so brave, never afraid No one will look out for her East of the sun and west of the moon
2.
She’s quiet and lonely She’s sad and alone She’s waiting for something And wants to go home She lies awake, lonely Wonders; who is he? Who is this man beside her? She can’t let it be Once it’s dark he’s there How can she know him? “Just ring the silver bell my dear, And all your wishes will come true Just ring the silver bell my dear, And anything you want, you’ll have I’ll give you joy and happiness Whatever you wish, I’ll bring for you Just ring the silver bell my dear” She’s quiet and lonely She’s sad and alone She’s waiting for something And wants to go home She lies awake, lonely Wonders; who is he? Who is this man beside her? She can’t let it be Once it’s dark he’s there Loneliness keeps her How will she ever know his name? Hidden in the dark “Just ring the silver bell my dear, And all your wishes will come true Just ring the silver bell my dear, And anything you want, you’ll have I’ll give you joy and happiness Whatever you wish, I’ll bring for you Just ring the silver bell my dear” Now she can go home
3.
At last, happy at once Her family thrilled and loving Her mother scheming “Let me see you alone, I have secrets to tell, Let me tell you, but hide it well! When it’s dark, find out who he is, But don’t wake him up, or you’ll regret this” The girl was wary, but trusted her mother They loved each other So she took and hid her words Hoping to solve the mystery He was suspicious, but happy To love her was all he wanted Trying to understand, she hid in the dark Tried to be still Tried to hold still Tried to be quiet But he woke and all hope was lost If she had waited one day more They would be happy and free Now he must flee East of the sun, and west of the moon “Follow me if you dare”
4.
Where is she going to? When will she get there? She meets wonderful women who will Help her, guide her, giving her What she will need to find the truth And the wind will fly her Over oceans and mountains, will lead her To a place, that lies East of the sun and west of the moon Where is she going to? When will she get there? She meets wonderful women who will Help her, guide her, giving her What she will need to find the truth And the wind will fly her Weary, she travels far Where will the wind blow? in one way there will be somewhere to Go her ways will weave themselves Weave their way to one who needs her near And the wind will fly her She’s the one who will finally Save him, help him, guide him The time has come, won’t be a day more They’re happy and free Now, they can flee

East of the sun, and west of the moon

about

«east/west» is Anna Klungre’s debut album, and one of her biggest projects thus far. The music is based on traditions from jazz, improvisational and choral music, and with them, Klungre has composed a piece telling the Norwegian fairytale “East of the sun and west of the moon”. The music varies from thoroughly arranged chorales and melodies, to freely improvised parts that transports the listener through the journey of the protagonist in the fairytale. All of the lyrics and music are written by Klungre, with inspiration from Norwegian choral music, Bach, and improvised, experimental vocal music.
